Chief Strategy Officer

Hi Dominique, so tell us what your work involves?

I have a very diverse role at ooba.

A big part of my role is looking after the technology capability for the business. This means I’m responsible for ensuring that it works well and is well structured. Also, that it’s able to adapt and respond to what the business needs, which can be very diverse and change rapidly.

Another big part of my job is focused on strategy, including helping to formulate it and then drive it through the organisation (especially where technology is involved).

What’s your approach to your work and career?

There’s always opportunity to be better.

On a daily basis, it’s easy for all of us to get distracted by everything that’s going on around us. The person who can focus and who is able to choose the right things to focus on is the one who’ll be able to accomplish meaningful things in their life and make a difference.

So my approach to my work and my life is to be aware of what’s going on around me, but to focus on the things I can control and to make decisions (and do the work) that will have an impact and make a difference.

How did you get started in your career and become CSO at ooba?

I’m in my second career. I started in my second career by being involved in traditional IT work, such as helping SME companies get their technology requirements sorted out and how it could be used to help them improve their business.

It was in this role that I first interacted with ooba. At the time, ooba was in its start-up phase and the business was growing rapidly off the back of a booming property industry. There were lots of areas of the business that needed attention, especially the management of information, so it was an amazing opportunity at the time for me to get involved and help establish technology systems and infrastructure at the company.

Eventually, I moved from a consulting role and joined ooba as an employee in an Enterprise Architecture role.

Over time, as I helped build the technology systems and teams in the organisation, my role has evolved from technology and into strategy.

What’s the best thing about working at ooba?

We really do things that make a difference!

The work that we do, it has a real impact. It has a real impact on people. It has real impact on the South African economy.

It has the potential to make a genuine difference in the way we are as a country.
